If you added tags to your life, what would they be? How would you describe yourself in five tags?

#father
#husband
#grandfather
#son
#brother
#writer
#uncle
#nephew
#friend
#neighbor
#cousin
#fatherinlaw
#soninlaw
#brotherinlaw
#grandson

Again, if you had to choose five to represent yourself, how would you boil down your list?

Let’s start with my daily tags, those tags that come into play every single day…

#father
#husband
#grandfather
#writer
#friend
#neighbor
#fatherinlaw

That’s a little better. This isn’t to say that the other tags aren’t important, it’s just that they don’t drive my everyday life. There are still two too many. This is a brutal challenge. How do you choose one thing over another in this list? Truly, that’s what we are doing, aren’t we? In choosing our tags, we are saying that a specific “#” is more important and critical in our life than the ones we have put to the side.

At this point, I’m going to remove #neighbor; it’s a little redundant to #friend. The neighbors that I have true contact with I consider my friends.

#father
#husband
#grandfather
#writer
#friend
#fatherinlaw

One left to un-#. Though it’s become a daily routine, the #writer tag does not define me as much as the other tags. So here goes…

#father
#husband
#grandfather
#friend
#fatherinlaw

My list, boiled down is a good representation of the things that are the most important in the makeup of who I am. They represent my daily identity that drives my world and my life. They represent the reason for ‘being’.

One more step, putting them in order of importance, top to bottom.

#husband
#father
#grandfather
#fatherinlaw
#friend

The Author and his Grandkids

The author and his grandkids, all sporting their “grandpa” shirts.

And there you have it. I can confidently look at my list and know that in fulfilling these roles I am focusing on the most important things in my life. It doesn’t mean that the other tags are discarded, they just have their place in my life, their spot is secondary to the five tags that critically define me.

What are your five #lifetags? How do they define you? Are you true to tagging your life every day and feeding these stories? I hope so.
